G8...Huntsville welcomes the world

Hard to believe that this little town was the meeting place for this year's G8. It all seems so surreal now. For several days this community was looking like something out of a movie. The military, RCMP and OPP had this town covered. They were in the sky too. Jets circling and choppers zipping back and forth. Strange new people were everywhere, but we knew who they were. All this was to keep us and the world leaders safe from harm....and I can't tell you how good it felt. It was weird, but good. We started off the week with a Pow Wow. The music and the dancers were beautiful...really good medicine for the heart and soul.

As the arrival of leaders and press got near, the town was still quiet. They planned for the worst and hoped for the best. I think we were all holding our breath...unsure of what the protesters had planned. Nervous about what could happen to this beautiful community.

On the eve of the summit's first day the leaders began their arrivals. As the sun set, we watched the leaders of Italy and Russia arrive by helicopter. It gave me goosebumps to watch them fly over the water and land at the resort...what a neat thing to experience. Once in a lifetime perhaps...

The good news is that we had no disruptive protesters arrive...lots of free hugs, bubbles and chalk drawings on the sidewalks. The Oxfam "big heads" were here, World Vision, Bill Nighy and a monk from Japan. Seriously, that was it! You could feel a release of tension and the townspeople gathered Friday night and created what could only be described as a street party.

The skies are quiet, not a cop to be found....zero destruction. Life has returned to normal, we have great memories and a mayor that deserves a wonderful holiday.

why i love lavender...

it came into my life when i was desperate for comfort and healing. this sweet and dainty flower became a sort of medicine...a cure for broken hearts. something to help us all sleep at night...giving our sorrow a bit of time off.

it's unmistakable scent became a part of my life. like scents do. it brings tears to my eyes, but also reminds that such pain could only come from a mother's love....and how can that be a bad thing? so here i am in june...almost 8 years later, and the presence of lavender brings back who she was to us and what we're all missing each day that goes by without her. marilyn june...mom and nanny...

**update for you blog hoppers...nice to meet you!
this is my first time for friday flowers...
it's an old post but one of my favorites.
have a great weekend.

my june garden

look at these pink peonies, showing off as the white ones are coming to an end...

my lavender patches are doubling in size every year. i love lavender. i bought more to spread around this place. it's pretty and it smells like heaven.

also i have a patch of blue iris that is really amazing this year...must have been perfect conditions as the flowers are the largest i have seen yet. here's hoping for just enough rain and just enough warm sunny weather to keep things blooming. i think i want to be a gardener when i grow up.

my muskoka garden

my garden is a work in progress. when i close my eyes i can see what it will look like one day. some folks have the luck of heading out to the nursery to "buy a garden". i've never been that girl.

i collect these little living beauties...a few at a time. some came with me from my last home. i miss the ones i left behind. i miss the gardens i left behind. it was a very different climate. you almost couldn't go wrong. it was a long hot and humid season. i had a very happy garden.

i've had to look at things differently here. it's a harsh winter and a short summer. i have poor soil conditions and i can't forget the deer and bunnies!

it's all not bad news though...if you get down low and take a close look at things...
the color is there. here and there actually. some of it i had nothing to do with!
