feeling like summer...

the hammock is getting some use...
napping and reading happen here.
beautiful sunny hot days
and hardly any sign of bugs.

it smells so lovely in the house tonight.
right before dinner
i snuck off to cut some lilac.
not a bumper crop this year...
all the more reason to bring them in to enjoy.

call mom...

there have been so many days
that i have wished i still could.
because there is nobody like your mom.
we used to talk every few days.
the conversation flowed naturally...
we just said it like it was,
because i was her daughter.
i was in my early 30's when she died.
not her little girl anymore.
raising two daughters of my own.
so we talked like friends.
she was my best friend
and when i needed advice or support
i called her.
i called her when things were falling apart.
when i had good news or something fun to share
i called mom.
other women have come in and out of my life.
some have really tried to fill the void...
and i love them for that.
there are some i've secretly wished would adopt me,
but i honestly do know that it would not help.
because there will never be another.

and i miss you.

i love to putter in the garden...

i've been on my hands and knees all week
plucking weeds,
laying down mulch,
moving baby plants from here to there.
i love baby plants.

of course you know i'm a softy,
 so some weeds get to stay
if they're pretty.
i love wildflowers.

we've had this pile of river rock
leftover from a project last summer.
it's on the grass.
it needs to move.
so i used it as a border for some of the garden.
there was a pretty brown snake sunning in the pile
so i scooped it up and made a little home for it in a bucket
until Elsie got home from school.
i love snakes.

the "lawn"
is either dead
or it's covered in dandelions, rocks
or wild strawberries.
i love berries.

i'm trying to get all this done
before the blackflies arrive.
i do not love blackflies.

i've had to cover my hostas with netting.
either the deer or maybe the bunnies
had munched them down to nothing.
the nets are working...
so glad because,
i love hostas.

oh my girl..

my little Boo is 14 today.
did she not JUST turn 13??
remember?...bangs and pineapple upside down cake?...
wasn't that just the other day?
how come she's taller than me?

like every year she had her girls here for a sleepover
and they played for hours in the field behind the house,
under the light of saturday's supermoon
until i called them in.
they jumped into the hot tub for a while,
then ate cupcakes, licorice and chocolate
and watched movies late into the night.
oh how nice to be a girl...

and then sunday night the big family came over for
just a little more celebrating.
it makes me happy to see her being loved.
this girl, quietly and in her own special way,
gives out so much love every day of the year.
this girl is kindness,
she's a dancer.
this girl is funny and so smart.
she is a best friend.
she is so full of love,
you can see it in her eyes and her smile.
we're all very lucky to have her.
happy birthday elsie.

busy, busy little life...

well look at that...
it's may already.
i have a list of things to do
as long as my arm.
a bunch of little things.
none of them are
big on their own,
but when you start writing them down
it starts to really add up.
we have a birthday girl in the house.
so, i have some shopping, planning, cooking, cleaning, wrapping, entertaining to do this weekend.
and while all that is going on,
mike is out of town,
emma works all weekend so she'll need rides,
elsie is in a badminton tournament all day saturday and
she has a bunch of friends sleeping over that night.
they want to eat pizza, watch movies, do facial masks,
 hot tub and dye each others hair with streaks of colour.
(i said no to the hair...oh so messy)
the big family is coming for dinner and cake sunday night.
monday is going to be fantastic.
i am taking the day off.
then back to work.
lots going on before summer vacation.
elsie is in the school play,
emma has a trip to washington,
emma has prom,
emma was accepted to 3 universities,
so we have some touring to do.
elsie is busy practicing for her dance recital,
elsie is traveling to toronto,
both girls graduate this year.
dresses and shoes are checked off the list...
for them anyway...i have some shopping to do for me!
hair appointments...
birthdays...a wedding...
clean the house, do the laundry,
grocery shop, cook, drive, walk the dog,
spring gardening....
busy, busy, busy
and i'm grateful.
